Devil Dance mobile made of wire, stone, and devil claws by John Stickler
On permanent display at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library.
"Devil Dance" was a prizewinner at the first All-Tucson Art Show held at the Convention Center and was moved over to the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, with a number of other winners, at the time of the opening in 1990.
John C. Stickler graduated from Yale University in 1959 where he majored in Sociology, served as an editor of the Yale Daily News and took one graduate-level course in sculpture his senior year. The result of that class was a seven-foot stainless steel mobile, entitled "Conflict," which hung in one of Yale's spacious dining halls for many years.
Returning to Tucson he studied welded sculpture techniques at the U of A under John Cook. In 1960 they both entered welded artworks in the Arizona State Fair sculpture competition. The teacher took first place; the student took second.
The creative life in Tucson was interrupted first by the Peace Corps and then the U.S. Army. The next 30 years saw John launch an international advertising agency in Seoul, reporting the news for CBS Radio, marrying and raising a family, returning to the U.S. in 1976 and ending up back in Tucson as Public Relations Director for the Sheraton El Conquistador Resort when it opened in 1981.
Communication has been John's career, whether in advertising, public relations, journalism or non-fiction books. His latest book is Land of Morning Calm: Korean Culture Then and Now. A picture book for younger readers, it was illustrated by his wife, Soma Han.
